I was going into this expecting it to be for like 10 year olds and about 150 pages long but omg???? This was so good???? I’m obsessed。

ok, so i gave this book 4 stars because it was really interesting and a well-written backstory for Billy as well as Max。 all we get to see in the series as far as a backstory for max and billy is the flashback part in season 3 on the beach, which doesn’t tell us all that much about Max, and only covers a few parts of Billy’s past。 But this book covered a lot of Max’s life in Cali, and told us a lot about her relationship with Billy and why she is always tense and scared around him。 AND it was so ok, so i gave this book 4 stars because it was really interesting and a well-written backstory for Billy as well as Max。 all we get to see in the series as far as a backstory for max and billy is the flashback part in season 3 on the beach, which doesn’t tell us all that much about Max, and only covers a few parts of Billy’s past。 But this book covered a lot of Max’s life in Cali, and told us a lot about her relationship with Billy and why she is always tense and scared around him。 AND it was so interesting to get some insight into why Max is always telling Lucas to stay away from Billy。 All in all, a very interesting book and i will definitely read it again!! 。。。more

J’ai trouvé le livre très intéressant! C’était juste génial d’en apprendre plus sur le passé de Max。

wonderfully written, incorporates scenes from the show so well, Max's voice is very strong and true to her portrayal! great writing, and great to get to explore characters' backstories and inner thoughts/observations。 I wish that we'd gotten more explicit scenes from Max's life before Hawkins, but I appreciated how her old friends and her dad were integrated throughout wonderfully written, incorporates scenes from the show so well, Max's voice is very strong and true to her portrayal! great writing, and great to get to explore characters' backstories and inner thoughts/observations。 I wish that we'd gotten more explicit scenes from Max's life before Hawkins, but I appreciated how her old friends and her dad were integrated throughout 。。。more

the only thing i didn’t like was how it went back to the past then all the sudden came back to the present。 it changed tenses too much i feel like but maybe i just didn’t like that kind of style

I thought it was a pretty good read。 As a stranger things Fan I like to read books and I thought this added more background from where max cane from。

The problem with a lot of ties in books is they're either great, crap, or decent。 Runaway Max is decent, but suffers from the fact it's both prequel and sometimes novelization。 More or less novelizing Season 2 through Max's eyes, the book excels at backstory。 Details about why the family left California, why her dad is so removed from her family, her mother's marriage to Billy's father, and a series of chilling encounters with an increasingly dangerous Billy make up the bulk of the novel。The res The problem with a lot of ties in books is they're either great, crap, or decent。 Runaway Max is decent, but suffers from the fact it's both prequel and sometimes novelization。 More or less novelizing Season 2 through Max's eyes, the book excels at backstory。 Details about why the family left California, why her dad is so removed from her family, her mother's marriage to Billy's father, and a series of chilling encounters with an increasingly dangerous Billy make up the bulk of the novel。The rest is a sketched out version of the events of 2, skating past entire dialogue scenes in single sentences, and only making the broadest strokes of explaining what happened。 If you haven't seen Season 2, this book both spoils and doesn't describe it very well。All in all, worth the read for the Max and Billy backstory, just don't expect a meaty retelling of Season 2。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Interesting。Before season 4 of stranger things came out I wanted to read the books especially Max’s, because it looks like she will have a very large role in the new season。 I did get a lot of good backstory like her first impressions of Billy and how he affected her life, and what she thought of the gang。 However there wasn’t any crazy thing that surprised and that I think will play an important role in season 4。 It was still a good book, but I didn’t need to read it。

3。5 - This was at its strongest when it was focused on scenes that weren’t already part of the show。 Exploring more of Max’s backstory in California and her relationships with her mom, dad, and then Billy and Neil when they were introduced were great parts of the book。 There’s some pretty rough stuff in the book when it comes to Billy and Neil, but that’s to be expected based on what we see of them in Stranger Things。 I really liked Brenna Yovanoff’s writing and the themes she was exploring thro 3。5 - This was at its strongest when it was focused on scenes that weren’t already part of the show。 Exploring more of Max’s backstory in California and her relationships with her mom, dad, and then Billy and Neil when they were introduced were great parts of the book。 There’s some pretty rough stuff in the book when it comes to Billy and Neil, but that’s to be expected based on what we see of them in Stranger Things。 I really liked Brenna Yovanoff’s writing and the themes she was exploring through Max’s story。 But what dragged this book down for me was seeing all of the season 2 scenes play out on the page。 It’s way more interesting to get all new content rather than having to see scenes rehashed from Max’s POV。 For the most part I don’t think it added that much to what was already in the show。 It also erased a lot of narrative tension from the book because I knew what was going to happen in a bunch of parts。 I think it would’ve been a stronger book if it was all pre-Hawkins or a dual timeline story with her backstory interspersed with an all new story in between seasons 2 and 3。 。。。more

This book is AMAZINZG! Not quite as literary as Rebel Robin, but a strong side story and a biting commentary about late 20th century feminism。

i enjoyed the book but i kinda wish they focused more on max’s backstory and unseen moments rather than just giving us her perspective from s2。 admittedly it did give us character growth for max and the start of her friendship with steve – which we don’t see enough of in the show。

So good! I loved learning more about Max and see her point of view on things and people。

I love Max 🧡 This book gave me a new perspective of her life and damn it was hard。 I guess we could all understand that from the series but after watching season 4, seeing how she felt after Billy died, she is too good。 Billy doesn’t deserve the mourning and doesn’t deserve the way she feels guilty。

i love max so much and this book was so good at sharing her experiences i’m glad i learned more about her

⭐ 4。5No esperaba que me conmoviera como lo hizo。 Max encontró la valentía y la familia que tanto anhelaba tener。 Ahora me gustaría leer algo así desde su punto de vista de cada temporada, pero seguro sea pedir mucho。

This book has been on my tbr for years now and I think with the release of the 4th season, there aint perfect timing to read this but now。 I love love love Max so much in the S04。 But I am happy I get to know more about her and BILLY thru this book。 If you love Stranger Things and curious about Max's storyline, I highly recommend this one。 Max is sucha bad ass I love girls so much!! 💖💅 This book has been on my tbr for years now and I think with the release of the 4th season, there aint perfect timing to read this but now。 I love love love Max so much in the S04。 But I am happy I get to know more about her and BILLY thru this book。 If you love Stranger Things and curious about Max's storyline, I highly recommend this one。 Max is sucha bad ass I love girls so much!! 💖💅 。。。more

Out of all the Stranger Things novels this reads most like fan fiction。 It's mostly a retelling of season 2 and doesn't add much more background to Max's character。 Slightest spoilers:We get a few glimpses into her family life and her past but neither the runaway nor the rebel really stands out too much。 Also not a big fan of calling Billy more crazy and more of a monster than his violent father。 Out of all the Stranger Things novels this reads most like fan fiction。 It's mostly a retelling of season 2 and doesn't add much more background to Max's character。 Slightest spoilers:We get a few glimpses into her family life and her past but neither the runaway nor the rebel really stands out too much。 Also not a big fan of calling Billy more crazy and more of a monster than his violent father。 。。。more

I didn't know what to expect about this but damn, what a ride。 The insight abouth internalised misoginy and abuse is very strong a deeply thought for "a YA book of a show"。 Def my favourite book of the Stranger Things Universe and one of my fave YA ever I didn't know what to expect about this but damn, what a ride。 The insight abouth internalised misoginy and abuse is very strong a deeply thought for "a YA book of a show"。 Def my favourite book of the Stranger Things Universe and one of my fave YA ever 。。。more

I HATE BILLY

Soap

There was zero dialogue for a massive chunk of this book and it was very disjointed because of that。 I was not super interested

There story had potential but the characters were boring and this plot is not really adding anything new。

I did enjoy reading this book as I love the show。 However, I felt that it was branded more as a prequel when really it was mostly a retelling of season 2 from Max’s point of view。 It did sometimes jump back to when she was still living in California, but most of it was word for word what happened in the show。 Overall, I enjoyed the read but wished that it gave more insight into Max as a character instead of just rewriting all of season 2。

5/5 stars At first this book didn’t appeal to me as much as the others in this series until I thought about it and realized this was probably a way for me to get more Billy content。 And holy shit I was correct。 This short little book ended packing such a punch。 It was an inspiring coming of age story in terms of Max’s perspective but mixed with like the disturbing ass vibes from the movie the Butterfly Effect。 Most of the new scenes we got of Billy were truly horrifying, from seeing the extent o 5/5 stars At first this book didn’t appeal to me as much as the others in this series until I thought about it and realized this was probably a way for me to get more Billy content。 And holy shit I was correct。 This short little book ended packing such a punch。 It was an inspiring coming of age story in terms of Max’s perspective but mixed with like the disturbing ass vibes from the movie the Butterfly Effect。 Most of the new scenes we got of Billy were truly horrifying, from seeing the extent of the abuse he experienced from his father and how it was so greatly ignored。 But we also see how messed up this boy can be, how harmful and unhinged。 He didn’t really stand a chance at being anything other than a product of his environment。 Although he treats Max poorly, his rare moments of humanity are also only with her because she tried treating like a person a little。 In terms of Max’s journey I liked that this took a different approach than the Robin book by actually showing us events that she experienced in the show and us just seeing it through her eyes。 From seeing and processing the supernatural world, to finding a place where she belongs amongst her hard home life, and of course the budding love between her and Lucas。 If you love these characters and want a little recap of some scenes from season two you should definitely pick this one up。 。。。more
